The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Track

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.

Overall, the intro appears stunning. However, I felt that an element was missing in the music selection.

This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental option, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.

Personally, The series' intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when co-founder the performer wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.

Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of adventurous fun.

The show's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have a few changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be among these.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and YouTube.
