The acclaimed crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh installment, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode season created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."

The previous series wrapped up in recent years with a finale that attracted over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only arrived this week.

New Challenges for The Team

The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue working to combat corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a offender.

Yet, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless followers track the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new season."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the news and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Stephen Graham.

The BBC haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.

The finale of series six brought the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

However, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
