The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 people lost their lives and over 40 were wounded when attackers fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have called a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were taken to hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the events leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with five in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he heard “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
