The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... At the Moment.

The creative mastermind did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

Now that Season 1 of the hit sci-fi show wrapping up—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.

Regarding the Overwhelming Fan Response

Anyone might to get distracted by the rampant praise and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. He is doing his best to ignore the noise.

“It's like being an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it from others, and that's on purpose. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by audience chatter.”

“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.

The Big Question: Will the creator See the Ending of Pluribus?

So if the writers are not listening by public opinion, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… in a way.

“We've developed some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”

On the other hand, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.

“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Alternatively, why mess with the iconic TV endings?

“I want Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
