Investigation and Discovery of Contamination The country's authorities launched an investigation after the US Food and Drug Administration detected Caesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in a shipment of frozen coated shrimp sent by a local firm. Officials issued an advisory instructing distributors and sellers to dispose of the product and avoid selling it, even though the detected level was far below the authority's action threshold. They noted that the quantity of Caesium-137 it had detected would not present an acute risk to the public. The authority explained: “The primary impact on health of concern following longer term, ongoing low dose exposure (for example through eating of contaminated food or liquid over a period) is an increased risk of the disease, resulting from damage to DNA within living cells.” Extensive Contamination and Health Examinations Radiation tests revealed at least twenty-two factories in the industrial zone were affected. The official team did not identify the 21 other production facilities, but confirmed they would immediately undergo decontamination procedures carried out by Indonesia's nuclear authority. A senior official declared that residents residing in highly polluted zones would be moved until the site was decontaminated, adding that the safety of the inhabitants was the “top priority”. Health authorities also performed examinations on nearby workers and people located near the manufacturing zone, identifying nine individuals who showed signs for exposure to Caesium-137. These individuals were sent to a medical facility before being cleared to return home. Cleanup and Isolation Plans The affected sites will immediately undergo cleanup operations by the national atomic energy institute. Authorities have further designated the site of a recycled metal plant as an containment facility for contaminated goods. The country, which operates no atomic energy facilities or weapons program, believes that Caesium-137 may have come into the country from overseas. Origin of Pollution and Trade Limits An official spokesperson informed the media that scrap metal imports were the likely cause of contamination and announced the government would immediately impose limits on metal waste imports. He said that vehicles were also being checked for potential contamination as they traveled through the region.
