A minimum of 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio's Largest Law Enforcement Operation on Organized Crime

No less than 64 civilians were killed in a law enforcement action targeting the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's records.

Four law enforcement personnel were among those killed during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, government representatives stated. In excess of 80 individuals were detained.

Fierce clashes commenced when around 2,500 security personnel moved in on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho countered with gunfire, burning barricades and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, authorities confirmed.

The International human rights organization said it was "shocked" by the security action, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Mission Consequences

The informal settlements adjacent to Rio's airport is seen as the main base of a major organised crime groups.

Local authorities said no less than 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Dozens of people were wounded, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Community Response

Community members have described the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 people - to a "battlefield" since the operation began.

Access ways continue shut across the area.

Organized Crime Spread

The Comando Vermelho organization have been expanding their influence in the area, growing illegal substance trade paths and dominance over the slum communities.

Rio's police said in excess of 200kg (441lb) of drugs were captured in the operation, together with numerous weapons.

Mission Context

The combined action by various security forces follows a twelve-month inquiry.

Many of the individuals are thought to be participants in an organization from the Brazilian state who are currently hiding in the metropolitan area.
